Six Common Buttonhole Styles in Garment Construction

◆Rounded End Buttonhole

Commonly used for coats, jackets, pants and other garments with larger buttons. Can be sewn by machine or hand.

◆Bound Buttonhole

A more complex construction where both sides are finished cleanly. Requires some hand sewing to complete. Similar technique as making a bound pocket opening.

◆Straight Bar Buttonhole

Frequently seen on shirt garments.

◆Keyhole Buttonhole

Very common buttonhole style used in dailywear and formalwear garments.

◆Attached Buttonhole

Formed by a slit cut in the garment and edge stitched for reinforcement.

◆Buttonless Closure

No actual buttonhole. A common style for functional garments like outerwear and winter wear. Fastening is done with tabs, toggles, snaps etc.
